Hedda Gabler
by Henrik Ibsen
adapted by Christopher Shinn
Production took place in February 2023 at the University of Arkansas, featuring actors Gabriel Franco-Kull, Edwin Green, Allison Herman, Leah Smith, Charlotte Stover, Grace Taylor, Jordan Williams, and understudy Brendan Wolf, with costumes by Ripley DeCaluwe, set by Morgan McInnis, props by Karl Hermanson, lighting by Jackson Smith, sound by Trey Smith, stage management by Carley Klingerman, and assistant stage managers Madelyn Bilbrey and Chris Hutchings.
Director’s note:
“A society that celebrates women who get married and have kids, but equally shames women who don't want those things- isn't a society celebrating women. It is conditioning them." - Farida D.
Our story is both past and present because the themes of gender inequality and mental health struggles remain today. It is my intention to present Hedda is a product of her society, a tragic figure, and one who is more of a victim than a villain. Each person in this play, including Hedda herself, is capable of being both.
The challenges she faces, and the problems presented in this play have not been solved, they are ongoing.
Fortunately for us, we have access to support that Hedda did not.
If you or someone you know is suffering, you can now call 988. 988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (now known as the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) and is now active across the United States.
